A number of wonderful books about the Woodstock Festival for children and adults have been published or will be published shortly. The 40th anniversary of Woodstock is August 2009 and many of these books are connected to this cultural and historical milestone. Here is a selected list of the books inspired by Woodstock:
Woodstock Books for Children
My Summer Sleepaway: A coloring book for love children of all ages
By Rosie Haas and Shannon Francisco, 2008.
An activity book that integrates the story with 28 pages of coloring.
My Hippie Grandmother
By Reeve Lindbergh and Abby Carter, Candlewick Press, 2003.
A lovingly told and whimsically illustrated story of a granddaughter speaking about her hippie grandmother who has a cat named Woodstock, owns a lava lamp, and pickets in front of city hall..."I have a hippie grandmother. I'm really glad she's mine. She hasn't cut her hair at all since nineteen sixty-nine."
Woodstock Books for Adults
Taking Woodstock
By Elliot Tiber.
A moving and sometimes humorous story about one young man's coming of age, both in terms of his gay sexuality and his ability to succeed in a creative endeavor — helping to make Woodstock happen. The story evokes the time and place very vividly. Academy Award winning director Ang Lee is releasing a movie based on Tiber's book. The book contains material for mature audiences, including explicit descriptions of sexual activity.
The Road to Woodstock
By Michael Lang, Ecco, 2009.
Lang was the concert promoter who pulled it all together. The book is scheduled to be released in June 2009. It will be interesting to see Lang's perspective as he was the primary mover and shaker in organizing Woodstock.
Woodstock Vision: the Spirit of a Generation
By Elliott Landy, 2009.
Landy was the official photographer of the Woodstock Festival. Landy's photographs document the time and place.
